Dear Families of Higgins Students,
As we head into the final week of May, and then head into the final month of school teachers are in the process of wrapping up content in their subject's program of studies, and then will begin preparing students for summative assessments and culminating projects.
In this weekly update we will be covering the following items:
- Extended Absences
- Track and Field Updates
Extended Absences
As we head into the end of the school year many families ponder taking their families out of the country, either to visit family or start an early vacation. Please note that if you are planning to take your child out of school early an extended absence form is required. Please make an appointment with either Ms. Labarbera (Surnaes A-K) or Ms. Houle (surnames L-Z) to go over the reason for absence, and to sign an extended absence form.
For those families who like to go overseas, and plan to return to the 2024-25 school year late, please know there are consequences for your child's education. If you do not return by mid-September, you risk having your child withdrawn from the Calgary Board of Education, which means you will need to register for school through school engage when you come back. If your child is not a Canadian citizen this means registering and being re-assessed through the Calgary Board of Education Welcome Centre.
We ask that you try and coordinate the end of your vacation or overseas family stay with the beginning of the school year. Programs of studies in jr. high are busy, and catching up in 4 core subjects will prove difficult, especially in grade 9 where the content difficulty takes a significant jump as we prepare your child for High School.
For next year grade 10 students, missing any school in high school is very much not recommended due to the semester system.
Grade 9 Field Trip - May 29, 2024
A reminder to grade 9 families that our year end field trip is on May 29. Being on time for school this Wednesday is extra important. If your child is late it will be impossible to get them to the event, and your child will be attending class with a grade 8 homeroom that day.
Track and Field Update from our Physed Learning Leader Mr. McNeely
Track & Field Meet: Monday, June 3
Hello families! Higgins is very excited to be sending 130 students to our Divisional Track and Field meet. We want to thank the many volunteers who are donating their time to make this event happen.
We have confirmed two food trucks, which were mentioned in the Parent Letter that went home to families, but the exact trucks were not known at the time. Family Cheesed Truck (offering student friendly and some Halal options) and a Treat Truck, will be joining us for the event. You can view the prices and menu for these trucks on YYC Food Trucks (please understand that some menu items may not be available for the meet). Please ensure your athlete has a packed lunch, or enough money to purchase food, throughout the event.
This year, thanks to the generosity of the School Council, we have two 10 x 10 tarps with the Higgins' logo that will making their debut with us; however, we cannot stress the importance of sun-safety. Please make sure that your athlete has a hat, sunscreen, and the appropriate layering as we don't want anyone getting sick or having to leave the event early from getting too much sun.
We would also like to thank Norton Rose Fulbright, an international law firm in Calgary, who has been partnered with Dr. Gordon Higgins Schoolf for almost 30 years. Norton Rose Fulbright is providing every student and volunteer a water bottle with the Higgins logo, as well as paying for all buses to and from the track meet. A huge shout out to Norton Rose Fulbright for their continued support. You spoil us!
Finally, thank you to every athlete, student-volunteer, parent, guardian, volunteer, teacher, coach, and anyone that I might have missed, who has made the 2023-2024 athletic year a success! It takes a village to make each year memorable for our students and we could not have done it without your efforts!
Sincerely,
Colin McCracken
Principal
