Dear Parents and Guardians,
The following is an update for the week of May 13, 2024.
Congratulations to Mrs. Labarbera
Mrs. Labarbera has been an outstanding Assistant Principal at Dr. Gordon Higgins School over the last 5 years. She has worked hard to build relationships with students, families and staff with the sole goal of ensuring the best eduational experience for students. This past week Mrs. Labarbera applied to the position of Assistant Principal at Valley Creek School in NW Calgary, and was indeed the successful candidate. I would like to wish Mrs. Labarbera all the best at her new school. We are not saying goodbye to her just yet however, as Mrs. Labarbera will remain with us for the remainder of this school year.
The process is already underway to find her successor, and when we have news to announce we will be letting you know.
School Council
Our next school council meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 14 at 6:30 PM in the school learning commons.
Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Tests
Tomorrow, May 13 marks the first Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Test. As a reminder to grade 9 parents, provincial achievement tests occur on the following days:
- Monday, May 13: English Language Arts Part A
- Wednesday, June 12: English Language Arts Part B
- Thursday, June 13: Mathematics Part A
- Tuesday, June 18: Mathematics Part B
- Wednesday, June 19: Social Studies
- Thursday, June 20: Science
Grade 9 Farewell - IMPORTANT
This years grade 9 farewell will occur on Tuesday, June 25. Information regarding this event will be coming to you shortly. As was mentioned in previous communications with parents, if students have an absenteeism rate of 25% or greater they will not be able to particpate in the Farewell Ceremony. This absenteeism rate does not include illness or scheduled appointments students may have had. Every other absence will be factored into the rate. This coming week, students who have an absenteeism rate of 25% or greater will be spoken with, and parents will be informed. These students will have the opportunity to change behaviour however. If these students demonstrate an absenteeism rate below 25% between May 15 and June 19, they will be able to attend in the ceremony. This means that if students have 6 or more absences during this time, they will not be able to attend the ceremony. Please note that students who have demonstrated significant behaviour, and who are not following the student code of conduct will not be able to attend the ceremony. Parents and students will be informed.

May 15: Grade 8 Field Trip to Telus Spark - Thank you to School Council for funding this trip.
May 15: Grade 9 Leadership Field Trip to watch The Calgary Surge Basketball Team at Winsport. - Thank you to School Council for Funding this Trip.
May 29: Grade 9 Field Trip to a Farm to learn about biodiversity. - Thank you to School Council for Funding this Trip.
June 3: Track and Field Meet for 130 of our students. - Thank you to the Law Firm Norton Rose Fulbright for paying for bussing and providing water bottles.
