Good Day Higgins Families,

Below is the updates and activities for the week of September 23, 2024.

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

Monday, September 30 is the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation and schools within the Calgary Board of Education are closed on that day.   Dr. Gordon Higgins will honour this day on Thursday, September 26. Classes will be engaged in disccusing and learning about the need for reconcilation with our Indigenous People's, and the roles we as citizens play in furthering this cause.  At Dr. Gordon Higgins we do not shy away from decisions made by previoius governments, instead we acknowledge past atrocities, and we face those challenges head on. We encourage staff and students to wear orange on Thursday, September 26.  There is still lots of work to do if we are to move forward.

Northeast Calgary Success Stories - Representation Matters

At Dr. Gordon Higgins School we are proud of being a school situated in Calgary's North East.  The diversity of this area is quite honestly breathtaking. We are also aware that Calgary's North East does not always get it's fair share of positive news, and we feel that that this lack of positive news overshadows all the good that comes from the people who live here. Representation matters, so we are dedicated to having our students meet leaders who either work in the North East, or who grew up in the North East.

This week, we are pleased to highlight the work of Jermaine Kootenay.  Jermaine is the Branch Manager at the Bank of Montreal (Buffalo Run Branch), and he came to Higgins to speak with Mr. Brar's Business class.  Jermaine leads an all Indigenous branch, and he had an inspiring conversation with students about his upbringing in Calgary's North East Students learned about his time growing up in the North East, to hearing about his academic and professional journey from attending Mount Royal University to being a leader who proudly represents who he is at one of Canada's largest banks. During his time with the students, Jermaine highly encouraged students to pursue their entrepreneurial and personal dreams in the future.

After speaking with students, a student made the following comment:  "I liked how he grew up in the North East like us, and how he pushed himself to be the best"!

Representation Matters!!!!!

Welcome Back Event

Starting at 6pm on Thursday, September 26 and going until 7 PM, the school is proud to host a casual and informal Welcome Back Event where we'll be serving Halal Hotdogs, and enjoying the company of each other.  We look forward to seeing you all here at this school sponsored event. Hot dogs are being provided by your School Council.
