Celebrating the North East

This week Dr. Matthew Trieu, an optometrist who grew up in the North East, and has proudly lived in the North East his entire life, visited our grade 9 business class.

He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary. Dr. Trieu then moved to Philadelphia and completed his Doctor of Optometry degree at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 2016.

Dr. Matthew Trieu's experience includes externships at the Palo Alto Veterans Hospital where he managed ocular disease such as diabetes and macular degeneration. He rotated through Aran Eye Associates in Miami, working closely with ophthalmologists managing post cataract patients and other ocular diseases.  He completed an externship in Raleigh, North Carolina where he performed vision therapy on post concussive patients and worked with the optometrist for the NHL team Carolina Hurricanes.

Dr. Trieu was an absolute joy to have in the classroom for our Business 9 Class. He was able to help the students understand the demands of having high academic expectations when pursuing the medical field, but he also emphasized a strong work and life balance with your other passions. Dr. Trieu left an impact on our students that will be felt for years to come!

Student Feedback

“He made me want to try harder in school because of his strong balance between work and family. His hard work early on in his career has allowed him to have more autonomy with his schedule. He also made me want to start my own business” – DGH Business 9 student

“He’s very humble and well put together! He has had the pressure since a young age to be in the medical field, like lot of immigrant kids like myself. He’s relatable and it makes me want to be in the medical field also, such as potentially being a nurse or doctor” - DGH Business 9 student

We are proud in showing our Higgins Students that life in the North East of Calgary can be incredible, and filled with opportunity.

Halloween

On Thursday, October 31 we encourage students and staff to dress up, and be creative.  At lunch time, we will be hosting a Halloween Costume Schedule.  We just ask that students follow our dress code which involves the following:

  • Faces cannot be covered (though we do encourage creative and scary makeup)
  • Drugs or Alcohol displayed on costumes, or as a theme, are not permitted.
  • Anything that could be used as a weapon is not permitted.  This includes fake knives, guns, sticks, pretty much anything that could be used as a weapon.

We look forward to seeing student creativity on this day.

Sincerely

Colin McCracken, Principal
