Celebrating the North East
Omar Sherif (AR: عمر شريف) is a journalist with CBC Calgary who works within the video and digital spheres. He covers stories about culture, sports, local affairs and diverse communities in the city.
Dr. Gordon Higgins School was fortunate this summer to have a news feature written about our new Basketball Court by Omar. His talented writing skills showcased the beauty of our school, Rundle community, and Northeast Calgary. Omar and the entire CBC team fully displayed the great diversity that exists in our community. His article lead to many great networking opportunities for the school and the Physed program that they are very grateful for!
The students in Mr. Brar’s leadership class were inspired by Omar’s message that it’s never too late to start something new. After attaining an Undergrad Degree in Business Administration at MRU, he would enroll into the Print and Online Journalism diploma at SAIT and work his way to be a key journalist with CBC Calgary.
Student Feedback:
"The most inspiring thing about Omar to me is, how he came to Canada from Egypt at 16 years old. I found this inspiring due to the fact he got his life to where it is without being very familiar with the country. Me, personally if I came to Canada at an older age like him I think it would be really hard and challenging for me to settle in so well."
"I'm really inspired by Omar because as a Muslim he also had strict parents and limited choices of careers that they wanted for him, but he still made it to where he is now with CBC. After realizing that there are very few people in the CBC organization that are of the Islamic faith I was even more impressed. He inspires me to work hard and let nothing in the way of me to become the best"
"When he mentioned that just because we don't see someone that looks like us doing it, doesn't mean we can't be the first. That was really powerful to me and touched my heart because individuals like me aren't always represented in larger roles or jobs in the corporate world, but it's up to us to be the change we want to see".
School Clothing - Hawks Wear!
Since the return to full time learning after the Pandemic, Higgins has not focused on selling school clothing. This is about to change however. We are proud to announce that this week, we will be giving students, families and staff the opportunity to purchase Hawks Wear. Please stay tuned for more information.
Sincerely,
