Good afternoon Higgins Families,

Below is a weekly update:

Request for Parent Volunteers: Campus Calgary OpenMinds Field Trips to Art Commons

Students in the Thursday Art Club will be going on a Campus Calgary OpenMinds field trip to the Art Commons from November 18 to November 22. We will be leaving each day at 8:05am and returning to school by 2:30pm. We are looking for one volunteer for each day of the field trip. If you are available to volunteer for this field trip, please contact Jennel Frederick at jrfrederick@cbe.ab.ca. Please indicate what day you are available and who your student is if possible. This field trip is going to be AMAZING and we would love for you to volunteer.

Ms. Frederick is passionate about Art Education, and I would like to thank her for the time and dedication in making this week long experience happen.

Student Learning Conferences

Student Learning Conferences are fast approaching.   The schedule leading up to conferences on November 28 and 29 is as follows:

Monday, November 18 - November 28

As of 10am on Monday, November 18, you are able to go online to book your 10 minute conference through your MyCBE Account and Conference Manager.  If you have difficulty booking conferences online, you may call the school at (403) 777-7060.  We hope to see as many parents as possible.  It goes without saying, that as these conferences are about your child, they are expected to attend.   In some cases, teachers will be reaching out to ensure a conference is booked.

Thursday, November 28

These conferences take place after the school day from 4pm - 8pm in the school gym.

Friday, November 29

These conferences take place from 8:30am - Noon in the school gym.  There are no classes being held on this day.

School Clothing and Active Wear

We have not actively marketed our school clothing as we were in search of a new provider that was approved by the  Calgary Board of Education.  We are pleased to announce that Skylie Athletics has been chosen.   There are a number of items that can be purchased through the online Hawks Store.  This helps to promote school pride, and we believe we have a lot to be proud of at Dr, Gordon Higgins School.    The Online Store can be found at Higgins Hawks Apparel | Skyline Athletics | powered by OrderMyGear

Celebrating the North East.....Because it's Worth Celebrating

The Individual we are celebrating this week grew up in the North East, is one of our former parents, and has made it his career goal to help kids.  What an amazing role model for our students, your children.

Eddie Richardson III, the Founder/Director of Genesis Basketball and the Director of Basketball at Edge School (Calgary).

Eddie has a deep connection to our Northeast community growing up in the community of Whitehorn and graduating from Lester B. Pearson High School. After High School, Eddie would go on to have an illustrious basketball career, which included being a 4-time ACAC all-star, ACAC Basketball Player of the year, 3-time CCAA All Canadian, CCAA National Basketball Player of the Year, and CCAA Athlete of the Year!

He declined numerous offers to play professional basketball in Europe and Asia, for career aspirations in Calgary, while focusing on his dream of helping younger players reach their basketball goals and maximize their potential.

After graduating, Eddie found the Genesis Basketball program in 2006 – one of the city’s most elite basketball programs. In addition to coaching and running Genesis, Eddie has found the time to run clinics at the grassroots level at various Calgary junior and senior high schools

In 2017, Eddie was recognized in Avenue Magazine as one of the Top 40 under 40 most inspirational Calgarians.

The theme of Eddie’s conversation with our Higgins Leadership class was focused on navigating through hardships and distractions to find your own unique purpose in life.

Eddie's words were truly inspiring for our Leadership class as they reflected on their own purpose in life to better impact their school, community, and city.  Afterall, dreams start young.

Additionally, next week our Higgins Sr. Boys and Sr. Girls basketball teams will be  participating in the Edge School Jr. High Jamboree Basketball Tournament. The tournament features 16 teams competing over two days at the Edge School with no cost to any of the teams. This great opportunity for student-athletes was created by Eddie and his staff. We thank Eddie for his vision and having us be part of this amazing basketball tournament.

Student Feedback: (Looks Like Eddie Made an Impact)

“I felt inspired when he said not all success stories are pretty. We are not defined by where we start. We can still reach the finish line even if we start way behind. His words of: we all have a purpose and nobody can tell us what it is, its OUR purpose and be an asset, never a liability, will live with me forever”

“He makes me want to be stronger by learning how to do things on my own, being independent, create a better life, and along with being the best athlete. Always remembering to try my best, be grateful, and put my family first”

“It was really inspiring when he said life can be hard and it’s not always going to be good, but you should never give up. He is at a good position in his life, but it wasn’t always that way for him. However, as he mentioned you always have to remind yourself of your PURPOSE!”
