Dear Families
Below is the update for the week of Monday, January 27, 2025.
Friday January 31
This is a professional learning day for teachers, and therefore no school for students.
Grade 9 Transition to High School
By the end of the day on Monday, January 27 students should have completed option selection for High School. Please ensure you are having discussions with your child regarding option selection.
Following the option selection teacher's will be putting together their recommendations for academic courses. Higgins teachers will not change their course recommendations, so parents are asked to contact their child's high school should they want to challenge a recommendation.
Winter Band Concert
This past Thursday we held our Winter Band Concert. Students performed numerous selections, and as Principal I have to say I was truly impressed by the selection of pieces, and the growth we witnessed from students. Congratulations to all students and Mr. Zacharias for putting together an outstanding concert.
Report Cards and Beginning of Semester 2.
Report cards will be visible to you on your MyCBE accounts by tomorrow, January 27. If you prefer a paper copy, please call Mrs.Park at (403) 777-7060 ext. 0.
Semester 2 begins on Tuesday, January 28. This means that students will experience new option courses, and in some cases may have a new teacher for physical education. If students want to investigate a different option than scheduled, we ask that students wait until Monday, February 3rd. Options are very full, so changing options is not guaranteed.
Middle School Well-Being Symposium
Tomorrow, Monday, January 27, Mrs. George and Ms. Houle will take a group of 8 diverse students to participate in a middle school Well-Being symposium at Mount Royal University. The data shows us that Middle School students across the country are struggling, and this symposium is a step toward giving students voice, and helping them be part of the solution. We are excited by what outcomes are going to come from this.
Celebrating the North East
For the Higgins Speaker Series this week, Jassie Kang (CPA, CA), an Audit Partner from an accounting, joined us as the final speaker for the Business Class in Semester 1.
Known for being a dynamic leader passionate about helping his clients succeed, our DGH students gained much value as he shared his education and professional journey. He has built and led teams to develop strategies to drive growth personally and professionally. The students were impressed with the long list of recognizable companies he has worked shoulder-to-shoulder with. He talked about always bringing a practical, innovative and business-minded approach to helping his clients succeed.
He spoke to students about how he takes great pride in being a leader of his vibrant team and expressed to them that leadership starts with strong relationships. No matter where they belong on the organizational structure, how you treat everybody will be the legacy of your career.
Jassie did an excellent job showcasing his passion for the importance of diversity in the workplace and was proud to speak to the multicultural students in Mr. Brar’s Business Class.
The excellent speaking engagement concluded with a “Classroom Continental Breakfast” provided by Mr. Brar and Mr. Kang to celebrate a superb semester of growth, new perspectives, and connection to many wonderful guests!
Student Feedback
“Sometimes it doesn’t boil down to only hard work and ambition it is the relationships you create and maintain that matter. Success is not a one-person show, and part of being a good leader or co-worker is being able to be connected”
“He inspired me by telling us that he was the first generation Indian in Canada, and in his first year, Mr. Kang didn’t focus on University, but then locked in, and now he’s very successful! So it shows that anyone can become successful when they change their mindset.”
“His focus on valuing all his relationships in his life was evident when he mentioned he consulted his teenage daughters’ opinions in preparation for this presentation. He is well-versed in the professional accounting world. Still, he understood, speaking to us today, that asking his daughters, who are also in junior high school, what they like in guest speakers speaks volumes about the person he is and his professionalism. Everybody has value in his life from the boardroom to the classroom!”
